The leaves will soon be changing. Fall will be here with a crisp chill in the air. I am reminded that everything is in flux. As the days get colder, soon and very soon, there will be snow. My child will be getting bigger every day. Holidays will grace us. Time will move on. You cannot hold onto time. But I am reminded that God has a program and a design, and we are called to be living through Him.
I am reminded of a story in Mark, where Jesus hungrily curses a fig tree that did not have any fruit. Later the disciples find it withered. Jesus could have left the tree alone but he didn’t. Jesus could have forced the tree to have fruit. But he didn’t. This tells me that Jesus was teaching us something. It teaches me that Jesus, who gives life, has power over death.
We know Satan as the one that has power over death. But God is the one that really has the power. He has the power over death and life. And He chooses to give life. Christ also chooses to give life.
Remember when Jesus was speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well? He asked her for a drink of the water that she had. When it was really her and her people that needed the water of life which Christ came to offer.
Jesus came to meet death face on, and give life. But then why did he curse the fig tree? Because it didn’t do as it was supposed to. Sure, it wasn’t the season for figs but this was Jesus. The fig tree did nothing wrong, except not notice the one to whom it served.
We too have a calling to give the life of Christ, and this is done in-season and out-of-season. If Jesus is the one we serve then let us serve. Time is of the essence!
But don’t take my word for it; read: Mark 11:12-33, John 4:7-10, And 1 Timothy 4:1-5.
